Amid the present Covid-19 surge in Odisha, as many as 49 students at the MITS Engineering college in Rayagada tested positive for the virus on Monday.

On Friday (January 7), 5 students of the college had tested positive for coronavirus. With Monday’s new cases, the total number of infected students in the college has risen to 54.

Following the detection of new cases, the Rayagada district administration has declared the college's Hostel A and B as micro containment zones and sealed the premises.

Sources said during a random Covid test conducted on the inmates of institutions, 49 were found infected with the virus.

As per reports, all the infected students have been kept under isolation at the hostel and necessary medical assistance is being provided by the district administration.

Meanwhile, the contact tracing of Covid positives and the sanitization process of the college premises have been also been initiated.

Rayagada Collector Saroj Kumar Mishra said the district administration is taking all necessary steps to contain the spread in the district. 

"As COVID-19 cases are rising in the district, some cases have been reported from a private college. So we have declared micro containment zones and are strictly enforcing the Covid protocols, " said Mishra.

Meanwhile, Odisha reported 4,829 new Covid-19 positive cases including 384 cases in the 0-18 years age group in the last 24 hours.
