As many as 22 medical students of Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR) in Burla have tested positive for COVID-19. All the positives are reportedly the 2nd year girl students of the institute and they have been admitted to the Covid hospital.

A 4th year student Dibya Darsan Tripathy said, "When one of the 1st year students tested positive, we had requested the authorities and conducted screening. Later, 3-4 students were found infected. Besides, 6-7 students of the 4th year were found positive."

He further said that around 10-20 students were found positive on Monday and some of them are currently in Covid isolation ward while others are in home isolation.

Among the infected students, there is only one male student (4th year). All the students were staying in the college hostel. While most of them had no early symptoms, some students had developed fever, sore throat and body ache. But all the infected students are fully vaccinated, he said.

It is suspected that the recently held annual function had led to the Covid-19 spread in VIMSAR.

House Surgeon president, Suraj said there are two reasons that might have led to the spread of the virus. "While the first can be attributed to the function, there are many patients in our ward who might be Covid positive. As the ward duty is on, the students might have come in contact with the patients. As 3-4 students are staying in one room in the hostel, it is quite certain that if one gets infected by the virus, others will also get infected," he said.
