The excise duty on petrol increased by 194 per cent while on diesel it grew by a huge 512 per cent between 2014-15 and 2021-22 even as crude oil prices remained below $80 per barrel between 2015-16 and 2021-22.

According to official data provided by the Petroleum Ministry's Petroleum Planning and Analysis Cell (PPAC), in 2021-22, excise duty on petrol rose 194 per cent to Rs 27.90 per litre and on diesel it rose 512 per cent to stand at Rs 21.80 per litre.

As prices of petroleum products have now been aligned to market rates, fuel prices will rise each time, global crude prices rise and the rupee falls against the dollar.

Petrol price in Angul was Rs 104.90 while the same was sold at Rs 103.23 in Balasore. Petrol rate in Bhubaneswar- Rs 103.11, Cuttack Rs 103.54, Dhenkanal Rs 103.98, Jharsuguda Rs 103, Kendrapara Rs 103.11, Puri Rs 103.26, Sambalpur Rs 103.85 and Malkangiri Rs 108.92.

As far as the diesel is concerned, it was sold at Rs 96.40 in Angul, Rs 94.81 in Balasore, Rs 94.68 in Bhubaneswar, Rs 95.10 in Cuttack, Rs 95.52 in Dhenkanal, Rs 94.79 in Jharsuguda, Rs 94.66 in Kendrapara, Rs 95.41 in Sambalpur, Rs 94.83 in Puri and Rs 100.29 in Malkangiri.

Similarly, price of non-subsidised LPG cylinders in Bhubaneswar was Rs 1,079.00 on Monday while in Cuttack, the LPG rate was Rs 1079.50.
