As the Income Tax Return deadline for Assessment Year 2022-2023 is July 31, several Twitter users took to the micro-blogging site and trend ‘Extend Due Dates Immediately’. Till July 20, 2.3 crore income returns were filed for fiscal 2021-22.

"Pls extend, as you all know that, getting update the information in AIS, 26As etc reconciliation of individual income with this also require sufficient time and some error will pop up while filing (site issues ) all this we have only 30 to 40 days," wrote a Twitter user.

Requesting the Union Finance Minister for an extension, another Twitterati wrote, "...Need to #Extend_Due_Dates_Immediately as too many compliance to fulfill in July month. ITR can not be completed Timely, Please do it mam, its the need of the hour."

Will the Centre extend ITR filing deadline?

The Union Revenue Secretary Tarun Bajaj has clarified that the government has no plans to extend ITR due dates this year.

"People thought the routine now is that dates will be extended. So they were a little slow in filling the returns initially but now on a daily basis, we are getting between 15 lakhs to 18 lakh returns. This will slightly go up to 25 lakh to 30 lakh returns," he told PTI.

Usually, return filers wait till the last day to file returns, he said, adding, "Last time 9-10 per cent filed on last day. Last time, we had over 50 lakh (filing returns on the last date). This time, I have told my people to be ready for 1 crore (returns being filed on the last day)."
