New Rs 2000 notes
The Rs 2000 denomination notes will cease to have their value and will be just another piece of paper if one does not exchange it at any bank today. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has declared September 30 as the last date for the exchange.
Earlier, there were reports that the RBI would extend the deadline till October end, but RBI has rubbished the claims and clarified that September 30 is indeed the last date. Customers have to exchange their Rs 2000 notes before they lose their value from tomorrow.
The RBI had given four months from May to September to deposit or exchange the notes. Customers can go to their nearest bank branch or regional branches of RBI and get the Rs 2000 notes exchanged. Furthermore, banks will remain closed on October 1 (Sunday) and October 2 (Gandhi Jayanti).
After today i.e. September 30, the Rs 2000 notes will continue to remain legal tender. However, customers cannot exchange it and they will not be accepted for transaction purposes.
Worth mentioning, the RBI decided to withdraw the Rs 2000 denomination bank notes from circulation on May 19 that was introduced on November 16.
