In a move to ensure safety, seat belts will be compulsory for drivers as well as passengers in cars, the Mumbai Police said on Friday.

As per a notification issued by Mumbai Police, seat belts will be compulsory for car drivers and passengers from November 1, 2022.

“As per the Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act, 2019, under section 194(b) (1) Whoever drives a motor vehicle without wearing a safety belt or carries passengers who are not wearing seat belts shall be punishable," read the notification issued by Mumbai Police.

In view of the existing problems, the Motor Vehicles which do not have seat belt facility for all commuters have been allowed to install seat belt facility till November 1, 2022.

“All motor vehicle drivers and all commuters in vehicles, whoever travels on the roads of Mumbai city are hereby informed that, it will be mandatory for drivers and all passengers to wear seat belts while travelling from November 1, 2022. Otherwise, action will be taken under section 194 (B) (1) of the Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act, 2019,” the notification added.
