Tension flared up at Chasapada Square under Balikuda police limits in Jagatsinghpur district on Tuesday after a woman and her six-year-old daughter were killed in a road mishap.

The deceased have been identified as Kalima Bibi and her daughter Alia Khatun.

According to a source, Muktar Khan of Mulisingh area under Tirtol police limits along with his daughter-in-law and two granddaughters was going to a nearby hospital on a scooter. As they were nearing Chasapada Square, a sand-laden truck hit them.

Under the impact of the collision, Kalima and Alia were thrown off the scooter and fell on the road leading to their death. However, Muktar and his second granddaughter were escaped with bruises.

As the news spread, local people staged a roadblock by burning tyres. The angry villagers demanded measures to prevent accidents on the stretch which is a narrow one. Due to the demonstration, traffic on the road was disrupted for some time.

On getting information, inspector-in-charge (IIC) of Balikuda police station, Salil Pradhan along with a team reached the spot. He discussed with the villagers and managed to pacify them and the roadblock was lifted, leading to traffic movement.

The police recovered the bodies and sent them to Jagatsinghpur district headquarters hospital (DHH) for post-mortem. The truck was detained at Tirtol police station.
