At least six passengers were killed and several others sustained critical injuries after a bus in which travelling in overturned after being hit by a coal-laden truck near Bidu Chhak at Soro in Balasore district on Saturday afternoon.

According to source, the mishap took place when bus named- Shantilata was en route to Bhubaneswar from Udala.

The identities of the deceased are yet to be ascertained.

The driver of the bus lost control on the steering wheel and it turned turtle after a coal-laden truck hit it from behind, sources informed adding that the injured were immediately rushed to Soro Community Health Centre.

While three persons declared brought dead, three other died while undergoing treatment. A one-year-old infant is among those killed in the mishap. Health conditions of other injured persons are stated to be critical, sources added.

“The bus has seating capacity of 45 people. I was informed that the bus met with an accident near Bidu Chhak at Soro. Several persons died and many sustained injuries in the mishap,” said Dillip Choudhary, owner of the bus.

Meanwhile, police have reached the spot and started an investigation into the matter.

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh to the kin of each who have lost their lives in the tragic mishap. He has also directed the authorities to ensure the best treatment possible to all who have sustained injuries in the accident.

BJP National Vice President Baijayant Panda has also expressed grief on the loss of lives in Soro road accident.
