A patient allegedly died after jumping from the fifth floor of AIIMS, Bhubaneswar on Saturday. The deceased has been identified as Mahendra Swain, a resident of Puri district.

Swain was undergoing treatment at the surgery ward, which is on the fifth floor of the premier hospital. He allegedly jumped off the window of the ward.

Hearing a loud thud, people and hospital staff rushed to the spot, rescued Swain in a critical condition and he was immediately attended to by doctors. However, he succumbed while undergoing treatment. The hospital authorities ascribed Swain’s death to severe internal injuries.

As of now (till the filing of this news piece), the reason why he took the extreme step is yet to be ascertained.

According to the PRO of the hospital, the patient’s wife was in the ward when the mishap occurred. The PRO also stated that Swain had one of his feet amputated due to the disease he was suffering from.

It is presumed that he might be either under severe mental stress owing to his disease or not satisfied with the treatment he was receiving at the hospital.
