Tension flared up after a Class X girl, who was returning from matric exam with her father on a motorcycle, was critically injured in a road mishap at OTM Bazaar in Cuttack’s Choudwar on Monday.

The injured girl, whose identity is yet to be ascertained, was rescued and immediately rushed to a private hospital.

According to sources, the girl riding pillion on a bike with her father was returning from the exam center. As they were nearing OTM Bazaar on National Highway 55, a speeding trailer truck reportedly hit them, and under the impact of the collision, they were thrown off their bike.

The girl is learnt to have suffered a severe injury on her leg.

People nearby immediately came to the rescue of the girl and shifted her to a private hospital. In no time, people gathered at the accident spot and staged a roadblock. They alleged the stretch of the National Highway passing through the market has become accident-prone as road expansion work is underway. The locals demanded a complete ban on the plying of heavy vehicles on the stretch.

On being informed, police reached the spot and pacified the angry people following which the roadblock was lifted and the traffic movement became normal.

“The road construction work is going on by fits and starts. Contractors are leaving the construction work halfway. Political leaders to government officials are involved in it. By allowing heavy vehicles on the road, the administration has only aggravated the situation. Because of this, a severe road mishap occurred today,” rued Maheswar Singh, a local resident.
