A home guard was crushed to death by an unknown vehicle on the Deogaon bridge under Ghasipura police limits of Anandapur sub-division in Keonjhar district on Thursday morning. 

The deceased has been identified as Suresh Rout, who was posted at Ghasipura police station. 

On being informed, a team from Ghasipura police station reached the spot and recovered the mutilated body of the home guard. The body was sent to Anandapur sub-divisional hospital for post-mortem.

Meanwhile, his colleagues from the police station and family members reached the hospital to claim the body after the autopsy.

According to a source, Suresh and another home guard were deployed at an ATM counter in Deogaon market on Wednesday night. It is yet to be ascertained exactly when the mishap occurred, why he came to the bridge and what circumstances led to him coming under the wheels of a vehicle.

After committing the crime, the driver is believed to have sped away from the spot. 

While the vehicle is yet to be traced, Ghasipura police has initiated a probe and launched a manhunt to nab the driver of the vehicle. 

Home guard Suresh is survived by his wife and a four-year-old son. 

As the news of his death broke, a pall of gloom descended on the locality.
