In a tragic incident, an elderly man lost his life after falling into the basement through the lift passage of a residential apartment on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar, on Tuesday.

As per reports, the elderly man lived at Hi-Tech Plaza, the residential complex located near Sundarpada, on the outskirts of the capital city. Like on every day, the elderly person pressed the button of the lift to go down floors. After the lift door opened, he stepped inside only to fall to the basement.

Though the first door of the lift opened, the lift compartment didn't arrive due to which the elderly man fell down after stepping through the way inattentively. The elderly person suffered grievous injuries after falling from a height. He was rushed to a nearby hospital where the doctors declared him dead before arrival.

A team from the Airfield Police Station arrived at the spot after they were informed about the tragic incident. They have launched a probe into the incident.

Sources informed that the lift's door lock was malfunctioning since many days due to which the door opened even though the lift compartment didn't arrive on the floor.

Residents of the building have raised concerns over the matter as the irresponsibility of the lift operators and other persons employed for maintenance resulted in the tragedy. The residents said their lives too will be at risk if the lift is not repaired immediately.
