A Class 9 girl student died after allegedly being hit by a hyva truck while she was on her way back home from tuition class on a bicycle in Kendrapara district on Monday.

The mishap occurred near Hatabanapur chhak on Kendrapara-Danpur road under Sadar police limits. The deceased has been identified as Lakshmipriya Lenka.

As per reports, she was returning home after attending tuition class when the mishap occurred. She died on the spot.

Tension ran high following the death of the girl with angry locals damaging the truck and thrashing the driver. They demanded ban on entry of heavy vehicles on the road and adequate compensation for the bereaved family.

“The accident occurred at 9.30 am today. The truck did not have fitness and insurance. Besides, it was overloaded with sand,” alleged a local resident.

As per eyewitnesses the driver was in an inebriated condition accompanied by four others at the time of the accident. After the mishap, they tried to flee but were caught by the locals.

“My daughter was returning home after attending tutorial class when the truck hit and killed her,” said the bereaved mother.

“Why the trucks are running rampantly on the local road, who will now take care of my family,” she asked.

Meanwhile, police reached the spot and detained the accused driver. The police also tried to pacify the locals who were protesting by keeping the body on the road.
