In a tragic incident, two people died after a boat capsized in Chilika Lake on Sunday.

While the identities of the deceased persons are yet to be ascertained, the reason leading to the mishap is still not clear. 

As per reports, as many as 13 tourists from Puri town area had gone to Kalijaikuda, an islet located 3 km from Gambharigaon, for a picnic. While returning in the evening, the mishap occurred at Kalijaikuda. 

Local people immediately launched a rescue operation and rescued 10 people. Initially, it was reported that three people were missing. However, one of them, who was later identified as Ugrasen Das of Gambharigaon village, managed to swim to safety. He was spotted at Ferakuda islet and rescued. 

Initially, the rescue operation for the missing two was launched by local people. Later fire personnel joined them. Finally, the fire personnel fished out the bodies of the missing persons. 

At the time of filing this report, the reason behind the mishap was still not clear as the rescued persons couldn’t be contacted for their reactions.
