A five-year-old child on Saturday reportedly died after getting locked in a car at Barahipur village under Mahanga block in Cuttack district.

The deceased has been identified as Satyabrata Swain, son of Subas Chandra Swain and Minati Swain.

According to a source, Satyabrata, somehow, entered into a car parked near their house and the door got locked. It was around 12.30 or 1 pm. Not finding him in the house, his parents and family members started a frantic search for him everywhere including the nearby ponds. However, it didn’t occur to them that their son might be inside the car.

By the time they noticed him inside the car, it was too late.

They immediately rescued him and rushed him to a government hospital in Mahanga where the doctors pronounced him brought dead.

“He often played inside the car. After not finding him, we searched for him for an hour before tracing him inside the car. We saw him sleeping inside the car. We felt relaxed. But when we took him out, we found him senseless. We rushed him to a government hospital in Mahanga where the doctor declared him brought dead,” said Minati Swain, mother of the deceased.

While it is suspected that the child might have died due to vehicular heatstroke, Mahanga Police have lodged an unnatural death case and initiated a probe.

Meanwhile, Odisha Police in a Tweet warned parents against leaving their children and pets in vehicles. The Odia tweet can loosely be translated as saying "While the outside temperature is 40 degrees Celsius, the temperature inside a vehicle goes up by 60 degrees Celsius in just 15 minutes. It may pose a threat to health and at times may prove fatal."
