Trump says India ‘pulled back’ on Russian oil, trade deal unaffected Photograph: (Canva)
US President Donald Trump said India “pulled way back” from buying Russian oil at his request and asserted that a recent Supreme Court ruling striking down his sweeping tariffs would not affect the India–US trade deal announced earlier this month.
He also described his relationship with Prime Minister Narendra Modi as “great.”
The remarks came after the Supreme Court of the United States invalidated Trump’s broad global tariffs in a 6–3 decision. Chief Justice John Roberts wrote that the president had exceeded his authority by invoking the 1977 International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) to impose tariffs without congressional approval.
India ‘Pulled Back’ on Russian Oil
Trump said New Delhi had committed to stopping direct or indirect imports of Russian energy and would instead increase purchases of American energy products. Under the interim trade framework, the US reduced proposed tariffs on Indian goods from 25% to 18%.
He insisted that the court’s ruling “changes nothing” for the India–US agreement and that India would continue to pay the revised 18% tariff rate.

New 10% Global Tariff Announced
Hours after the ruling, Trump signed an executive order imposing a fresh 10% global tariff on foreign goods, effective February 24. The White House said additional duties could be levied under Section 301 and Section 232 laws.
The move signals Trump’s determination to sustain his trade agenda despite the legal setback, while maintaining that strategic ties with India remain on a solid footing.
