Security arrangements at Kolkata’s Raj Bhavan were significantly strengthened late Thursday night after West Bengal Governor C V Ananda Bose received a threatening email warning of a possible blast and posing a direct threat to his life, according to an official statement.
The Governor’s office said the matter was treated with utmost seriousness and was immediately reported to the Union Home Ministry. The Bengal Police and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) are now working in close coordination to ensure the Governor’s safety. Governor Bose is already under Z-plus category security cover.
Midnight Security Review, Investigation Underway
Following the threat email, a midnight meeting of senior security officials responsible for the Governor’s protection was convened to assess the situation and further reinforce existing security measures. Authorities have confirmed that investigations into the source and authenticity of the threatening messages are ongoing. Officials also noted that similar threat messages had been received earlier, making the latest incident part of a troubling pattern.
Political Reactions Amid ED–TMC Standoff
Reacting sharply, BJP leader Amit Malviya blamed the Mamata Banerjee-led government, alleging a complete breakdown of law and order in West Bengal. He accused Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who also holds the Home portfolio, of prioritising political interests over public safety.
The incident comes amid heightened political tensions in the state. Earlier on Thursday, Chief Minister Banerjee visited the office of political consultancy firm I-PAC while the Enforcement Directorate was conducting searches linked to the coal smuggling case. Banerjee accused the ED of seizing party-related materials and alleged misuse of central agencies by the Union Home Minister.
Amid the escalating BJP–TMC confrontation, the Chief Minister is scheduled to lead a protest in Kolkata on January 9 against the ED raids, as the state prepares for elections in the first half of the year.
