Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday paid homage to Mahatma Gandhi on his 78th death anniversary, recalling the Father of the Nation’s emphasis on Swadeshi as a cornerstone of a self-reliant India. In a post on X, the Prime Minister said Mahatma Gandhi’s lifelong focus on indigenous values continues to guide India’s resolve towards becoming a developed and self-sufficient nation, adding that his ideals and actions will always inspire citizens to uphold their duties.

In another post, PM Modi highlighted Gandhi’s unwavering belief in non-violence, describing it as a powerful force capable of transforming the world without weapons. Quoting Sanskrit verses, he reiterated that non-violence represents the highest form of duty, truth, and righteousness.

BJP president and Union Minister JP Nadda also paid tribute, describing Mahatma Gandhi as an embodiment of sacrifice, penance, and humanity. He said Gandhi’s ideals of truth, non-violence, peace, and goodwill continue to illuminate India’s path towards self-reliance and development, inspiring generations to follow the values of morality, tolerance, and service.

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, a central figure in India’s freedom struggle, was assassinated by Nathuram Godse on January 30, 1948, while on his way to attend daily prayers. January 30 is observed as Martyrs’ Day.

To mark the occasion, the Centre held an all-religious prayer meeting and Martyrs’ Day ceremony at Rajghat in New Delhi, attended by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and other dignitaries. The Delhi Traffic Police have issued advisories, warning of possible diversions around central Delhi due to heightened security arrangements.
