India on Saturday observed the anniversary of the 2001 Parliament attack, paying tribute to the security personnel who laid down their lives while defending the “temple of democracy.”
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other national leaders led the nation in remembering the courage and sacrifice of those who protected Parliament during the terrorist attack.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath offered a humble tribute to the ‘immortal heroes,’ stating their sacrifice against the "brutal assault on the nation's sovereignty" will never be forgotten.
Union Minister Nitin Gadkari also saluted the brave souls, affirming that their service for the nation's protection will be perpetually remembered.
The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) specifically honoured Constable Kamlesh Kumari of the 88 Battalion. Her "indomitable courage and unparalleled valour" in engaging terrorists and providing crucial information led to the neutralization of all five attackers, though she tragically lost her life. She was posthumously awarded the Ashoka Chakra.
The attack on December 13, 2001, saw five heavily armed terrorists from Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) storm the Parliament complex. About 14 people, including security personnel and a civilian, were killed in the indiscriminate firing that ensued shortly after Parliament was adjourned.
On Friday, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla led the House in reaffirming the nation's unwavering resolve to fight terrorism and safeguard unity.
