Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday chaired a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) to assess the rapidly evolving situation in West Asia following the US-Israeli strikes on Iran and the subsequent regional escalation. The CCS reviewed the February 28 air strikes in Iran, attacks in multiple Gulf countries, and their implications for India’s large expatriate community. According to a statement from the Press Information Bureau (PIB), the panel expressed serious concern for the safety and security of millions of Indian nationals living and working across the region.
The high-level meeting also examined the difficulties faced by Indian travellers transiting through Gulf hubs and students scheduled for examinations in affected countries. The CCS directed all concerned departments to take necessary and feasible measures to assist Indian nationals impacted by the developments, emphasizing the importance of an early cessation of hostilities and a return to dialogue and diplomacy.
Monitoring Diaspora and Travel Disruptions
India has an estimated 9.6 million nationals in West Asia, including around 10,000 in Iran. With missile and drone attacks reported across the Gulf and several countries closing airspace, New Delhi is closely monitoring the situation. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has issued advisories urging Indians in Iran, Israel, Jordan, Qatar, the UAE, and Palestine to exercise caution, avoid non-essential travel, and remain vigilant. Indian embassies in Tehran, Tel Aviv, Abu Dhabi, and Damascus have activated helplines and remain in continuous contact with citizens.
Strategic Diplomacy and Regional Balance
The CCS meeting follows PM Modi’s recent visits to Israel and Tamil Nadu, where he inaugurated development projects in Madurai. During his visit to Israel, Modi strengthened bilateral ties through a Special Strategic Partnership. The current conflict places India in a delicate position as it seeks to balance strategic relationships while protecting its diaspora and economic interests. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has communicated India’s deep concern to both Iranian and Israeli counterparts, reiterating the need for restraint and urging dialogue to de-escalate tensions while respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all states.
