Reports stated that public outrage deepened after Banerjee’s controversial statement that the girl should not have gone out at night.

The remarks, made on Saturday, have been condemned as deeply insensitive and victim-blaming from several leaders, including Odisha Deputy CM Pravati Parida, who termed it as ‘shameful,’ particularly as it came from a woman leader.

Meanwhile, sources reported that protesters took to the streets on Monday evening, demanding accountability from the government and swift justice for the survivor. Several student groups, local residents, and women’s rights activists called Mamata’s comments unacceptable, urging her to apologise and ensure that justice is delivered swiftly.

As the outrage grows, political reactions have poured in from Odisha as well. The BJP has accused the West Bengal administration of suppressing information about the survivor’s condition and claimed that even her father has not been allowed to meet her.

Five Arrested; Prime Accused Identified

The Durgapur Police have so far arrested five accused in connection with the case. The latest arrest, made on Monday, is of Sheikh Saifin Ul, while four others, including the prime suspect, Nasiruddin, were held earlier.

According to police sources, Nasiruddin and one other accused are under nine days’ remand, while Sheikh Saifin Ul and three others are under ten days’ police remand for interrogation. Authorities suspect that more individuals may have been involved in the crime.

WB Police Assures Support, Safety

Commissioner of Police, Asansol Durgapur, CP Sunil Kumar Choudhary confirmed that the police are treating the case with utmost priority and have extended complete protection to the survivor and her family.

“From the very first day, I personally assured the survivor’s father of full safety and security. The victim has been provided 24/7 security,” he said.

“I had assured the survivor's father, personally, of complete safety and security. The family, however, declined personal security arrangements. The victim has been provided with 24/7 security. Yesterday, the DCP met the victim's father and inquired with them if they needed anything,” he added.

The incident took place late Friday night when the survivor reportedly went out with a male friend to buy food. A group of men followed them, separated her, and dragged her to a secluded area behind the Shobhapur hospital building, where the assault occurred.
