An Odia student pursuing LLB studies in Mumbai was found dead after her body was recovered from a deep gorge in the Lonavala area on Tuesday, police said.
The deceased has been identified as Shreya Narendra Pati (20), a third-year LLB student studying in Mumbai. Her body was recovered from a gorge estimated to be around 400 feet deep, following an extensive search operation.
According to information, Shreya had gone trekking in the Lonavala–Khandala region on January 31 and failed to return home, raising concern among her family members. She had reportedly informed her family that she was heading to Khandala for trekking. When she did not return by evening, repeated attempts to contact her were made, but her mobile phone was found to be switched off.
The situation took a serious turn after a local shopkeeper found Shreya’s bag in the area. On checking the identity documents inside, the shopkeeper contacted her family, who subsequently alerted the police.
Search Operation Launched
Following the alert, police reached the spot and launched a search operation with the help of a dog squad and drones. The operation continued for nearly 36 hours, covering difficult hilly terrain in the region.
After the prolonged search, police recovered Shreya’s body from a deep gorge in Lonavala, approximately 36 hours after she was reported missing.
Police said an investigation is underway to ascertain the circumstances leading to her death. At the time of reporting, officials were examining whether Shreya had gone trekking alone or was accompanied by someone.
Further details are awaited as the investigation continues.
