Kolkata rocked by powerful quake; Tremors across city
Kolkata experienced strong tremors on Friday afternoon, startling residents across the city around 1:22 pm.
The National Centre for Seismology (NCS) reported that the earthquake measured 5.5 in magnitude. It occurred at 1:22 pm IST at a depth of 10 km, with the epicentre located in Bangladesh at coordinates 22.57°N latitude and 89.11°E longitude.
The United States Geological Survey (USGS), however, recorded the quake at a magnitude of 5.3. According to USGS data, the epicentre was situated about 26 km southeast of Taki in West Bengal.
As of now, officials have not reported any casualties or structural damage.
Many residents took to X to describe the moment the tremors struck. One user wrote that it was the first time they had experienced an earthquake, while another described the shaking in Kolkata as intense. Similar reports of tremors were received from nearby districts.
