Every year on March 8, people across the globe observe International Women’s Day to celebrate the achievements of women and highlight the importance of gender equality and empowerment. The day recognises the vital role women play in shaping societies and contributing to social, economic, cultural, and political progress.
International Women’s Day also serves as a reminder of the challenges women continue to face worldwide. It encourages governments, organisations, and individuals to work together to ensure equal rights, opportunities, and representation for women in all spheres of life.
Theme of International Women’s Day 2026
The theme for International Women’s Day 2026 is “Give to Gain.” The campaign encourages people to adopt a spirit of generosity by supporting women’s growth, leadership, and opportunities. It highlights the idea that when societies invest in women’s progress, everyone benefits.
The theme calls for collective action from communities, institutions, and policymakers to create an environment where women can thrive and reach their full potential.
History and Significance
International Women’s Day has a history spanning more than a century. The idea first emerged in the early 20th century amid labour movements advocating for women’s rights. In 1908, women textile workers in New York protested for better wages, shorter working hours, and voting rights.
The first official celebrations took place in 1911 in the United States and parts of Europe. Later, in 1975, the United Nations formally recognised March 8 as International Women’s Day.
Today, the day continues to raise awareness about gender inequalities and encourages efforts toward building a more inclusive and equal society.
