Howrah-Guwahati Vande Bharat sleeper train: Key features and more explained

The Howrah-Guwahati Sleeper Vande Bharat Express, likely to be flagged off by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is all set to transform overnight rail travel between the eastern and the northeastern India. 

Designed specifically for long-distance night journeys, the new train aims to offer faster, safer and more comfortable travel across West Bengal and Assam.

The Sleeper Vande Bharat will operate with 16 fully air-conditioned coaches, including 11 AC three-tier, four AC two-tier, and one first-class AC coach. The total passenger capacity stands at 823 berths, with 611 in 3AC, 188 in 2AC and 24 in 1AC.

Features of the Howrah-Guwahati Sleeper Vande Bharat

Built as a semi-high-speed train with a design speed of up to 180 kmph, the train will run at an operational speed of 120–130 kmph on the Howrah-Guwahati route. The timetable is planned to ensure evening departure and early-morning arrival, making it ideal for overnight travel.

Passenger comfort has been prioritised through ergonomically designed berths, improved cushioning, enhanced suspension systems for smoother rides, and noise reduction technology. Safety features include the KAVACH automatic train protection system, CCTV surveillance, fire detection and suppression systems, emergency talk-back units, and modern driver cab controls.

The train will serve regional cuisine, offering Assamese dishes on Guwahati-origin services and Bengali food on trains starting from Howrah. Special arrangements have also been made for Divyangjan passengers, alongside improved sanitation using advanced disinfectant technology.

With modern design, competitive fares and upgraded amenities, the Howrah-Guwahati Sleeper Vande Bharat is set to redefine overnight rail travel in the region.
