Government extends LPG cylinder booking period
The Government of India reportedly extended the booking period for Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) cylinders, increasing it from 21 to 25 days, as per media reports citing government sources. As per the reports, this measure is primarily aimed at curbing instances of hoarding and black marketing that have been observed in the market. The decision reflects a proactive approach by authorities to stabilize LPG distribution and ensure fair access for all consumers.
Government sources indicate that this change was prompted by unusual booking patterns. There were specific instances where individuals who previously booked LPG cylinders approximately every 55 days had recently started booking them as frequently as every 15 days. This accelerated booking behavior suggested widespread hoarding, necessitating immediate intervention to prevent artificial shortages and ensure equitable distribution.
Boosting Domestic Supply and Prioritization
In conjunction with the booking period extension, the government has issued directives to refineries to significantly boost their LPG output. A clear mandate has also been given to prioritize domestic LPG connections over commercial connections, reinforcing the commitment that domestic consumers will always remain a top priority. These steps are designed to enhance the availability of LPG for households across the nation, informed sources.

Expanding International Partnerships
As per the reports, to further secure and diversify the nation's LPG supply, the government is actively scouting for more LPG partners. This initiative aims to broaden the network of suppliers and ensure a robust import pipeline. Several countries, including Algeria, Australia, Canada, and Norway, have already approached India with offers to sell LPG, indicating a strong international interest in meeting India's energy demands.
