The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has directed states to remove fruit-based beverages, ready-to-serve drinks, electrolyte drinks, and energy drinks deceptively sold under the brand or product name “ORS” from retail markets and e-commerce platforms, sources said.
In a letter dated November 19, FSSAI instructed all food commissioners in states and Union Territories to ensure the immediate removal of such misleadingly labelled products. The move comes after FSSAI observed that these beverages continue to be sold despite previous warnings, violating its October order.

Last month, FSSAI had ordered all food business operators to stop using the term 'ORS' (Oral Rehydration Solution) in labelling and advertisements, citing the practice as misleading to consumers. According to the October 14 directive, using the term 'ORS' in trademarked names or food product labels, even with a prefix or suffix, violates the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.
The October order also withdrew earlier FSSAI directives issued in July 2022 and February 2024, which had allowed the use of 'ORS' on food labels, provided a declaration stated that the product was not an ORS formula as recommended by the World Health Organisation.
FSSAI’s latest instructions aim to prevent consumer confusion and ensure compliance with food safety regulations.
