Former Railway Minister and senior Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Mukul Roy passed away on Monday at a private hospital in Kolkata. He was 70. Roy suffered a cardiac arrest at around 1.30 am at Apollo Hospital in Salt Lake, his son Subhranshu Roy confirmed.
A founding member of the All India Trinamool Congress, Roy played a key role in shaping the party’s early organisational structure. He later joined the Bharatiya Janata Party in 2017 and was elected as an MLA from Krishnanagar Uttar in the 2021 West Bengal Assembly elections. However, after the return of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to power, Roy rejoined the TMC in June 2021 along with his son.
Roy had also served as a Rajya Sabha MP and held the Railway Ministry portfolio during his political career.
Several political leaders condoled his demise. BJP leader Dilip Ghosh described him as an experienced politician who earned respect across party lines. Senior BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari also expressed grief, offering condolences to Roy’s family.
Roy had been unwell for the past few years and was largely inactive in active politics.
