Faculty crunch hits several AIIMS campuses, Bhubaneswar reports 29 per cent vacancy

Several All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) campuses including in Odisha’s Bhubaneswar are grappling with significant faculty shortages, with some institutions reporting that six out of every ten teaching posts remain vacant.

While staffing gaps persist across multiple centres, the shortfall is particularly acute in some of the newer campuses.

Vacancy At AIIMS, Bhubaneswar

According to information shared by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare Ministry in the Lok Sabha, AIIMS Bhubaneswar in Odisha reports 29.4 per cent vacancy. While AIIMS Patna in Bihar stands at 28.2 per cent, AIIMS Bibinagar in Telangana has 27.9 per cent vacant posts, and AIIMS Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh records the lowest among those listed at 22.8 per cent.

Highest Vacancy Levels

Among the institutes with the highest share of vacant faculty posts, AIIMS Madurai in Tamil Nadu tops the list with 61.7 per cent of teaching positions unfilled. It is followed by AIIMS Rajkot in Gujarat at 57.4 per cent.

AIIMS Raebareli in Uttar Pradesh has 46.9 per cent of its faculty posts vacant, while AIIMS Jodhpur in Rajasthan reports a vacancy rate of 45.4 per cent. AIIMS Gorakhpur, also in Uttar Pradesh, has 45.1 per cent of teaching posts lying vacant.

These figures highlight the staffing challenges faced by several campuses, particularly those established in recent years.

Lowest Vacancy Levels

In contrast, some AIIMS institutions have comparatively lower vacancy rates. India’s oldest AIIMS in New Delhi has 34.2 per cent of its teaching posts vacant, amounting to more than one in three positions remaining unfilled.

Overall, the data indicate wide variations in faculty strength across AIIMS campuses, with newer institutions facing relatively higher staffing gaps compared to some of the older centres.
