Delhi Red Fort blast case: NIA arrests suicide bomber’s aide; car was registered in his name

The National Investigation Agency has made a significant breakthrough in the Red Fort area bombing case with the arrest of a Kashmiri man, accused of aiding the suicide bomber.

The National Investigation Agency has made a significant breakthrough in the Red Fort area bombing case with the arrest of a Kashmiri man, accused of aiding the suicide bomber who detonated a vehicle-borne IED on November 10, killing 12 people and injuring 32 others in the heart of the national capital.

The arrested accused, Amir Rashid Ali, a resident of Samboora in Pampore, Jammu and Kashmir, was taken into custody from Delhi after investigators confirmed that the Hyundai i20 used in the blast was registered in his name.

NIA's statement

According to the NIA, Amir had travelled to Delhi specifically to help purchase the vehicle that was later turned into an explosive-laden car.

The agency’s forensic investigation identified the deceased driver and suicide bomber as Umar Un Nabi, a Pulwama resident and Assistant Professor in the General Medicine Department at Al Falah University in Faridabad. Another vehicle belonging to Umar has also been seized and is currently being examined for additional evidence.

The NIA has so far examined 73 witnesses, including several blast survivors, as it works to piece together the wider conspiracy.

The probe is being carried out in coordination with Delhi Police, J&K Police, Haryana Police, UP Police and other agencies. Investigators say multiple leads are being pursued to identify all those involved in the terror plot.
