The Delhi Government’s Directorate of Education (DoE) directed all schools on Saturday to conduct classes up to Class IX and Class XI in a hybrid mode after the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) imposed Stage IV of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP), with the city’s Air Quality Index (AQI) nearing the ‘Severe Plus’ level of 450.

The directive applies to government, government-aided and recognized private schools under the DoE, NDMC, MCD and the Delhi Cantonment Board. Schools have been asked to offer both physical and online classes wherever feasible, with immediate effect and until further notice. The option to attend classes online will rest with students and their parents or guardians. School heads have been instructed to inform parents promptly, while Deputy Directors of Education have been asked to monitor compliance.

Pollution Levels Trigger Stricter Curbs

The decision follows a sharp deterioration in air quality, with Delhi’s AQI rising from 431 at 4 pm to 446 at 6 pm due to slow wind speed, stable atmospheric conditions and poor dispersal of pollutants. Citing the worsening trend, CAQM invoked all measures under GRAP Stage IV across the National Capital Region, in addition to restrictions already in place under Stages I, II and III.

Key Restrictions Under GRAP Stage IV

Under the latest curbs, BS-IV and older diesel trucks have been barred from entering Delhi, except those carrying essential commodities. Construction and demolition activities, including linear public infrastructure projects, have also been suspended. CAQM has advised children, senior citizens and people with chronic health conditions to stay indoors and wear masks if stepping outside.
