A late-night pilgrimage journey ended in unimaginable tragedy when a tempo traveller rammed into a parked truck on the Bharat Mala Expressway in Rajasthan’s Jodhpur on Sunday. At least 18 people lost their lives, and three others were injured in the horrific collision that left the vehicle completely mangled.
According to Phalodi Superintendent of Police Kundan Kanwaria, the victims were residents of the Phalodi area and were returning home after visiting the Kolayat temple, around 220 kilometres away. The impact of the crash was so severe that several passengers were trapped inside the twisted metal.

A Scene of Chaos and Desperation
Rescue teams, joined by locals and motorists passing by, rushed to the spot to assist. “The bodies were stuck in the seats due to the sheer force of the collision. It took us hours to remove them,” said Phalodi Police Station Officer Amanaram. The injured were first taken to a nearby hospital and later shifted to Jodhpur through a green corridor for advanced treatment.
Senior officers, including Police Commissioner Om Prakash Mathuradas Mathur and Superintendent Vikas Rajpurohit, visited the hospital to oversee the arrangements.
Leaders Express Condolences
Former Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot expressed deep grief, tweeting, “I am deeply saddened to hear about the tragic accident in Matoda, Phalodi. I pray for the departed souls and strength for their families.”
As authorities continue to identify the victims, the accident stands as yet another grim reminder of how a moment’s lapse on the road can shatter countless lives.
