Ranchi: Senior BJP leader Yashwant Sinha was arrested on Tuesday along with party legislator Manish Jaiswal and 150-odd supporters in Hazaribagh district of Jharkhand after they allegedly tried to take out a religious procession.

"Some security men were injured when Sinha's supporters pelted them with stones in Mahudi area at Barkagao. Tear gas shells were used to disperse the mob," Hazaribagh Superintendent of Police Bhim Sen Tuti told IANS.

The former Union Minister and his supporters had come to Mahudi village to take out a procession on a religious festival. The district administration stopped Sinha and his supporters from proceeding further, after which he sat on a dharna.

When police was taking the senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader to Hazaribagh, his supporters threw stones at police who used tear gas to disperse them.

Police sources said two persons were killed in 1984 in clashes between two communities, after which no religious procession was held in the area. The district administration had imposed prohibitory orders.
