Kanpur: History sheeter Vikas Dubey who was arrested from Mahakal temple in Madhya Pradesh's Ujjain on Thursday, and was being brought to Kanpur by Special Task Force of UP Police amid unprecedented security was killed in an encounter while trying to flee from cops on Friday morning.

According to reports, as the convoy reached Barra police circle in Kanpur, the vehicle in which Vikas was seated, overturned after skidding on the road due to heavy rains.

Reportedly, Vikas, along with two other police personnel in the vehicle, were injured in the mishap.

As soon as Vikas was taken out of the vehicle, he snatched a rifle from the STF team and tried to fire at the police. He was killed in the retaliatory firing.

Following which, Vikas was rushed to the Hallett Hospital.

"Gangster Vikas Dubey attempted to flee after the car overturned. Police tried to make him surrender, during which he fired at the policemen. He was injured in retaliatory firing by police. He was later rushed to the hospital,"  SP Kanpur West was quoted saying ANI.

Vikas received a bullet injury on the chest which proved fatal.

Two STF personnel were also injured in the encounter.

STF officials admitted to the incident but refused to reveal the extent of injuries suffered by the gangster.

None of the officials were willing to comment on the development.

Five members of the Vikas Dubey gang have been killed in police encounters over the past seven days.
