New Delhi: In what could actually be a New Year Bonanza, the Indian Railways is offering a year-long 25% discount on containers & wagons hauling imported goods for hinterland haulage starting January 1, 2019, i.e. from today.

The move of the Railways is likely to generate added revenue and provide an added incentive to the container and wagon industry.

As per sources, this particular discount will be offered from January 2019 and remain in force till December 2019.

“New Year Bonanza for Freight Users: Railways is offering a year-long 25% discount on containers & wagons hauling imported goods for hinterland haulage from 1st January 2019, a move that will generate added revenue & provide an added incentive to the container & wagon industry,” tweeted Office of Piyush Goyal.

However, this discount will not be applicable on the notified commodities of the Railways, which include cement, iron ore, coal and food grains.

The private sector operators who are likely to benefit from the move are the private container operators and also the container corporation of India. The scheme will also help Railways gain some traffic from the road and generate an additional revenue stream.

Further, the Indian Railways is likely to review this particular scheme in June next year.
