Agra: A middle-aged woman was allegedly stabbed to death at her house by unknown assailants, who also took away cash and valuables, police said on Friday.

55-year-old Neelam, wife of an editor of a local Hindi daily, was stabbed to death around midnight last night, they said.

As soon as she opened the house door she was overpowered and attacked by the assailants, who took away cash and valuables before fleeing from the scene, they said.

The woman's father-in-law came out of his room when he heard a commotion and saw Neelam in a pool of blood. She died soon afterwards, police said.

Neelam's husband, Vijay Sharma, the Editor of a local daily Swarajya Times, had gone to Firozabad along with his brother to attend a marriage when the incident occurred, they said.

A police team led by the IG Agra Zone, Ashutosh Pandey, reached the spot, they said, adding that preliminary investigations have shown that a milk man, who got a property belonging to Vijay sold off, was visiting the house frequently and was last seen on the evening the murder took place.

The milkman has been held by the police for interrogation.
