New Delhi: Union Home Minister Amit Shah tested positive for COVID-19 on Sunday and has been admitted to hospital. Shah took to Twitter and informed about the development.

"I was displaying symptoms of the disease, so decided to undergo a test. My health is fine, but as per the doctor's advice, I have been hospitalised for further treatment," tweeted Shah.

Shah further urged people to isolate themselves, who had come in his contact in the past few days.

The 55-year-old home minister has been admitted in a room on the 14th floor of the Medanta Hospital. He has been kept under observation of Dr Sushil Kataria's. The entry to the hospital has reportedly been barred for now, a report by India Today said.

Sources said extensive contact tracing will be carried out to detect anyone who had come in contact with the minister recently.

Union Minister Babul Supriyo who met Shah during the last few days, informed that he has been advised by doctors to self-isolate.

Sources said Shah had come in contact with all his cabinet colleagues in recent meetings, however, it is unclear whether he met PM Modi recently. He was also present at the cabinet meeting last week where National Education Policy (NEP) was cleared.

It may be noted that the Home Minister has been spearheading India's fight against the novel coronavirus and even assisted Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in bringing the Covid situation in Delhi under control. He held a series of meetings when the infections were at peak in the national capital.

After the spread of the news, Twitter flooded with messages with several politicians cutting across political lines, eminent personalities and the common man wishing speedy recovery of the veteran leader.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi took to twitter and said: Wishing Mr Amit Shah a speedy recovery.

Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik also expressed his concern over the news and sent his wishes for Shah's recovery.

BJP National Vice President Jay Panda also tweeted: I pray to Mahaprabhu Jagannath for the speedy recovery of Home Minister @AmitShah Ji, who has tested Covid positive.

Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal has prayed for the well being of the Union Home Minister.
