New Delhi: Let us pledge to work towards a cleaner, healthier and a more prosperous planet, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Wednesday on the occasion of International Earth Day at a time when the entire world is struggling with the COVID-19 pandemic.

Taking to Twitter, PM wrote, "On International Day of Mother Earth, we all express gratitude to our planet for the abundance of care & compassion. A shout out to all those working at the forefront to defeat COVID-19."

Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu in his message on the eve of World Earth Day, he said let us all renew our commitment to shape our collective future on this planet by preserving and replenishing earth's valuable resources.

Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan urged people to protect mother earth and preserve her natural beauty for a healthier tomorrow.

"Mother earth has offered humanity the warmth of her abundance and compassion. On #EarthDay2020, let us come together in offering our gratitude and commit ourselves to protect mother earth and preserve her natural beauty for a healthier tomorrow," tweeted Pradhan.

Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik taking to Twitter, said the present crisis is a reminder about vulnerability of human race and our mother earth. He urged the people to stay home and appreciate the bounty of Earth, our home.

"EarthDay2020 is a special day, marked to appreciate our beautiful planet. It’s celebrated to make humankind aware of our responsibility to conserve energy, resources & nature. Our frontline warriors are the shield for humanity, let us all cherish them & mother earth," tweeted BJP Vice President Baijayant Jay Panda.

To demonstrate support for environmental protection, Earth Day is celebrated annually around the globe on April 22.
