Guwahati: At least two persons were killed and 30 others were missing after a country-made boat - carrying about 50 passengers capsized in Brahmaputra river in Assam this afternoon.

According to sources, the accident happened at around 2 pm today after boat crashed with a concrete pillar near the Aswaklanta temple ghat in Guwahati.

Meanwhile, the Army and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams have been called to assist in the rescue operations. .

According to one account, there were about 50 people on the boat including some children and women. The vessel was reportedly overloaded to its capacity and was also carrying at least 15 motorcycles to Madhyam Khanda in North Guwahati from Guwahati.

The Brahmaputra is in spate due to monsoon rains in the upper reaches of Arunachal Pradesh.
