Water level of river Baitarani breached the danger mark of 36.38 metres at Anandapur. The river is now flowing at 39.08 metres. Subsequently, flood water entered Ayattapur, Nuagaon and Raghunathpur.

As per reports, it is Chhattisgarh which has to be blamed again for a sudden rise in Subarnarekha river. Following heavy rains in the upper catchment areas of the river in the neighboring state, the Chhattisgarh government had to open the Galudih barrage releasing flood water into Odisha.
Informing the same, the Odisha Special Relief Commissioner (SRC), Pradeep Jena tweeted, “Galudih barrage in Jharkhand released 9473cumec =3.5lakh cusec through 14gates at 8pm. We will see a high flood in Subarnarekha system.”
The Engineer-in-Chief of Water Resources Department on Saturday said that the water level in Budhabalanga is rising and it may cross the danger mark by 9 am tomorrow, August 21.

Odisha SRC Pradeep Jena said the water level in Hirakud Dam has come down to below 622ft and is at 621.93ft now. "By tomorrow morning, we will try to bring down water level to 620.5ft. The current inflow is 3.23L cusecs while the outflow is 4.10L cusecs. Four more sluice gates of Hirakud will be closed, excess water discharge to continue through 20 gates of the reservoir," he added.
The depression is 200km away from Balasore coast now. It will intensify into deep depression in 6 hours. We have not said about its intensification into cyclonic storm. He said under its influence, squally surface wind reaching upto 55-65kmph expected in coastal areas, 30-40kph in interior districts. Several villages in Athagarh area of Cuttack have been marooned due to surge in floodwater from Mahanadi river. Many hamlets of Tigiria panchayat were also inundated due to backwater from the river. In order to deal with the situation, administrative authorities have launched evacuation and relief operations. Similarly, various villages in 5 GPs of Uttarbanki block have also witnessed deluge. Meanwhile, the famous Ansupa lake is also full to its brim.
The administrative authorities at several places have begun evacuation process to shift people in low-lying areas to safer and higher grounds in view of the flood in Mahanadi basin. As many as 400 people have been evacuated to 4 schools in Tirtol block. Similarly, locals of Sankhameri village in Badamba area have also been shifted to nearby high schools after breach in Mahanadi embankment.
The authorities of Hirakud Dam in Sambalpur have closed down 8 sluice gates of the reservoir in order to minimise the effect of the deluge due to floodwater and also maintain water level in the dam. It is expected that the reservoir will see more closure of gates before formation of another low pressure around August 19 as per the Met sources.
Kani river breaches embankment near Brahmacharipatna under Jajpur's Dasharathpur block inundating nearby villages. Kani is a distributary of Baitarani river.

Jagatsinghpur and Puri districts are at high risk due to flooding in Mahanadi. About 30-40% areas in Kendrapara will be affected. Impact will also be seen in Cuttack's Nischintakoili, Athagarh, Banki and Sonepur's Biramitrapur. Nayagarh's Kantilo, Bhapur, and Boudh’s Harabhanga will be inundated, said SRC Pradeep Jena.
Currently, excess water is being discharged through 34 sluice gates of Hirakud Dam. Eight gates will be closed to regulate and control flood situation in low-lying areas. These gates will remain closed till 9AM tomorrow (Aug 16), said SRC Pradeep Jena. He said rain in upper catchment areas has resulted in rise in Mahanadi water level. Current waterflow near Mundali is 9.1L cusecs, if 8 gates of reservoir are closed, it will decrease waterflow by 1.20L cusecs. By tomorrow evening, flow near Mundali is expected at 11L cusecs.
Mahanadi river breached the danger level near Naraj in Cuttack district. The river water flowing at 26.68m near Naraj as against the danger mark of 26.41m, informed the Central Water Commission.
Thuamul Rampur in Kalahandi district received maximum rainfall of 368mm. Due to extremely heavy showers, seven places in Odisha recorded rainfall of 200mm and above while 43 places record rainfall between 115mm and 200mm.
The water level of Hirakud Dam stood at 620.12 ft today (9 AM). Inflow of water was 8.66L cusecs while the outflow was 5.71L cusecs.
"We are anticipating a medium-level flood in Mahanadi. 10.5L cusec water is expected to pass through Mundali. Water release from Hirakud is in excess, that's being regulated. Collectors advised to remain alert to deal with possible flood situation: Floodwater has entered several houses in low-lying areas. Wherever there is a threat, people will be relocated to safer places," said Chief Secretary Suresh Mohapatra.

Day after Hirakud dam authorities accused Chhattisgarh of not cooperating in flood management in Odisha, the convener of Mahanadi Bancho Andolon Sudarsan Das on Sunday questioned why the State government is not holding discussions with the neighbouring State to find out a permanent solution for the frequent flooding in Mahanadi river system.
