The Regional Meteorological Centre of India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Tuesday predicted that the depression over north Odisha would weaken into a depression today. The Met Centre has issued red warning for heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places with extremely heavy (>20cm) rainfall at one or two places over the districts of Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Sonepur, Dhenkanal, Jharsuguda and Bargarh on Tuesday.
The East Coast Railways, on Tuesday, has cancelled 12 trains, diverted routes of eight others and short terminated another after a goods train derailed on Angul-Talcher road route on Tuesday due to heavy downpour under the influence of deep depression over the Bay of Bengal.
As Odisha gets battered by heavy rainfall since Sunday with Puri and Bhubaneswar recording all-time high rainfall among others, a portion of ceiling of the Cuttack Chandi Temple in Cuttack collapsed on Monday. The extremely heavy downpour has not only thrown the normal life out of gear but also claimed two lives, so far, in separate wall collapse incidents in the State.

Due to the rising water level owing to heavy rain in the upper catchment area, two more gates of Hirakud Dam were opened on Tuesday. Water is now being discharged through four gates. As per reports, a total of six gates of the dam will be opened today in a phased manner.

In a major update, the Engineer-in-chief of the Water Resources department of Odisha informed that flood in Mahanadi, Brahmani and Baitarani is unlikely. Only Baitarani has crossed the danger mark near Akhuapada. The rest of the rivers are flowing below the danger level. 2 places in the upper and lower catchments of Mahanadi have received heavy rain. Further, he said that 1 lakh cusec water will be released from Hirakud today evening.

Around 41 places in Odisha witnessed heavy rainfall in past 24 hours. Angul and Subarnapur have recorded highest-ever rainfall. Talcher recorded maximum rainfall of 394mm while Biramaharajpur in Subarnapur sees 372mm rainfall. Meanwhile, Sonepur town had a rainfall of 282.8mm, Boudh 262mm and Patnagarh 252mm.
