The Very Severe Cyclonic Storm “Biparjoy” begun its landfall process on Thursday evening. India Meteorological Department (IMD) DG Mrutyunjay Mohapatra on Wednesday said that the cyclone may cross Saurashtra and Kutch and adjoining Pakistan coasts between Mandvi (Gujarat) and Karachi (Pakistan) near Jakhau Port (Gujarat) by evening of June 15.
Cyclone Biparjoy made the landfall as a very severe cyclonic storm with a maximum sustained wind speed of 125-135 kmph and gusting to 150 kmph. As part of contingency planning in Gujarat, satellite phones and ham radio services have been made available to address potential communication disruptions caused by heavy rains or storms. Besides, mobile service operators have also been instructed to maintain operational alternative towers as a precautionary measure.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel over the phone on Thursday night and enquired about the situation in the state following the landfall of powerful cyclone 'Biparjoy'.
The intensity of cyclone Biparjoy which lashed Saurashtra-Kutch region has reduced from 'very severe' to 'severe' category hours after making landfall in coastal areas of Gujarat, an official said on Friday. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw held a live meeting at the 'war room' today on the preparations for Cyclone Biparjoy. "Currently, the wind speed is between 115 to 125 kilometres per hour. However, it can go up to 140 km per hour. Wind speed might decrease by midnight," says Gandhinagar MET Director, Manorama Mohanty.
"The major impact of Cyclone Biparjoy will be in Gujarat's Kutch and southern areas of Rajasthan. Heavy rains are expected to lash and there are chances of subsequent flooding too," said Narendra Singh Bundela, IG, NDRF.
