Lok Sabha Election 2024 Phase 2 Voting LIVE Updates: 63 per cent overall polling; Tripura records 79.46 pc turnout

Voting was held for a total of 89 seats across 12 states and UTs in the 2nd Phase of 2024 Elections on Friday. Out of the 89 Lok Sabha seats, 9 seats are reserved for Scheduled Castes while 7 are reserved for Scheduled Tribes. Besides, polling for 13 Assembly seats in Manipur is also underway. Voting for the remaining 15 seats in the state was earlier completed in the first phase. As per reports, there were a total of 1,210 candidates in the fray.

Over 63 per cent turnout in phase 2

Over 63 per cent polling was reported in the second phase of Lok Sabha elections covering 88 seats across 13 states amid few complaints of EVM glitches and bogus voting in some states. Polling for the second stage of the seven-phase elections started at 7 am and ended at 6 pm. Several states experienced intense heat conditions. The first phase of polling was held on April 19 in 102 seats across 21 states and Union territories.

60.96 per cent voter turnout recorded till 7 pm

Voting in the second phase of General Elections 2024 which commenced at 7 AM today simultaneously across 88 PCs recorded an approximate voter turnout of 60.96% as of 7 PM.  Voters from across 13 States/UTs cast their vote at polling stations braving the hot weather conditions. From newlyweds to senior citizens, tribals to IT professionals, PwDs, women and youngsters, all were seen in queues waiting to cast their vote. 

With the conclusion of phase-2, voting has been completed in 14 States/UTs for General Elections 2024.

LS polls phase-2 has been 'too good' for NDA, says PM Modi

UP records over 52 pc voter turn out in 8 constituencies till 5 pm

A voter turnout of 52.74 per cent was recorded till 5 pm in the eight parliamentary constituencies of Uttar Pradesh where voting was held in the second phase of the Lok Sabha elections on Friday, officials said here.

The polling was slated to continue till 6 pm. The constituencies that went to polls in this phase are Amroha, Meerut, Baghpat, Ghaziabad, Gautam Buddh Nagar, Bulandshahr, Aligarh and Mathura.

Voter turnout in Kerala crosses 64 per cent at 5.20 pm

With less than an hour remaining for the conclusion of polling in the 20 Lok Sabha seats in Kerala, the state registered a turnout of 64.73 per cent at 5.20 pm on Friday.

Kerala saw a voter turnout of 77.84 per cent in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls.

To reach that figure this year, the turnout has to see an increase of over 13 per cent in the remaining 40 minutes of polling.

Maharashtra sees moderate turnout, Assam records substantial votes till 3 pm

In Maharashtra's second phase of Lok Sabha elections, a voter turnout of 43.01% was recorded till 3 p.m. across eight constituencies. Polling commenced at 7 a.m. in eastern Vidarbha and central Marathwada regions, including Akola, Amravati, Buldhana, Wardha, Yavatmal-Washim, Hingoli, Nanded, and Parbhani, with voting slated to conclude at 6 p.m. Meanwhile, Assam saw a comparatively higher participation, with an estimated 60.32% of voters casting their ballots by 3 p.m. in the five constituencies under the second phase. Darrang-Udalguri recorded the highest turnout at 64.43%, followed closely by Diphu (ST) at 60.74%, Nagaon at 60.56%, Karimganj at 60.36%, and Silchar at 53.06%. Polling in Assam began at 7 a.m. and will end at 5 p.m.

West Bengal's second phase polling: Over 60% turnout recorded in three Lok Sabha constituencies

West Bengal's Darjeeling, Balurghat, and Raiganj constituencies saw a significant turnout, surpassing 60% by 3 p.m. Polling, active until 6 p.m., witnessed Darjeeling leading with 61.97%, followed by Raiganj at 60.20%, and Balurghat at 59.53%. Election Commission affirmed peaceful polling without any untoward incidents. However, 411 complaints were received by 2:15 p.m. Across 5,298 polling stations, 47 candidates, including BJP's Sukanta Majumdar, contested, with 51.17 lakh eligible voters.

Uttar Pradesh sees 44.13% turnout in second phase of Lok Sabha polls

As of 3 p.m., Uttar Pradesh's eight parliamentary constituencies recorded a 44.13% voter turnout in the ongoing second phase of the Lok Sabha elections. The voting, which commenced at 7 a.m., will continue until 6 p.m. The constituencies include Amroha, Meerut, Baghpat, Ghaziabad, Gautam Buddh Nagar, Bulandshahr, Aligarh, and Mathura. According to the Election Commission, Amroha saw 51.44%, Meerut 47.52%, Baghpat 42.92%, Ghaziabad 41.13%, Gautam Buddh Nagar 44.08%, Bulandshahr 44.54%, Aligarh 44.08%, and Mathura 39.45% turnout. Over 1.67 crore voters, 7,797 polling stations, and 17,704 booths are engaged in the electoral process across these constituencies.

Kerala records 52.25% voter turnout as polling nears conclusion

Over 600 Tripura tribal voters boycott polls over bad road

 More than 600 voters of a remote tribal village in Dhalai district, part of Tripura East Lok Sabha constituency, abstained from voting on Friday due to the unrepaired condition of a 7-km village road, an election official said.

The villagers, numbering around 900, have been persistently demanding repairs for months, emphasising the road's critical importance to their community, the official added.

"As per schedule, the polling team reached Sadai Mohan Para polling station under Raima Valley Assembly constituency in Tripura East Lok Sabha seat," the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) of Gandacherra (Raima Valley), Arindam Das, told PTI over the phone.

By 1 p.m., West Bengal's three Lok Sabha seats, Darjeeling, Raiganj, and Balurghat, witnessed a 57.29% voter turnout. BJP's Raju Bista alleged Trinamool Congress workers of instigating violence in Chopra, part of Darjeeling constituency. Bista claimed ruling party workers brandished firearms, intimidating voters, urging the Election Commission for urgent repolling in Chopra. Data from the Chief Electoral Officer's office revealed Darjeeling had the highest turnout at 49.09%, followed by Raiganj at 47.56%, and Balurghat at 44.93%. The accusations of violence add tension to an already closely watched electoral contest, highlighting the need for vigilance in ensuring fair and peaceful elections.

53.09 per cent turnout recorded in three Lok Sabha seats in Chhattisgarh seats till 1 pm

At least 53.09 per cent of the electorate cast their votes till 1 pm in three constituencies, having Naxalite presence, in Chhattisgarh in the second phase of the Lok Sabha elections on Friday, an official said.

"Amid tight security, polling began in Kanker, Rajnandgaon and Mahasamund Lok Sabha constituencies at 7 am and was underway smoothly. Till 1 pm, 53.09 per cent polling has been registered," the official said.

38.23% voter turnout during the first half of the day in 14 LS segments in Karnataka

 An estimated 38.23 per cent turnout was reported during the first half of the day in Karnataka, where the first phase of Lok Sabha polls in 14 of 28 constituencies is underway on Friday.

According to election officials, 38.23 per cent of the electorate in Karnataka had cast their vote till 1 PM. Voting began at 7.00 am and will end by 6.00 pm.

Out of 14 segments that are going to the polls today, the highest turnout of 48.10 per cent was recorded in Dakshina Kannada, followed by Udupi-Chikmagalur 46.43 per cent, and the least 30.10 per cent in Bangalore Central.

The turnout was 31.51 per cent in Bangalore South, and 32.25 per cent in Bangalore North.

33.80 pc voter turnout recorded in five seats of Bihar till 1 pm

A voter turnout of 33.80 per cent was recorded till 1 pm in the five Lok Sabha constituencies in Bihar where polling was underway in the second phase on Friday, officials said.

The polling started at 7 am in Kishanganj, Katihar, Purnia, Bhagalpur and Banka constituencies, and would continue till 6 pm, they said.

Fifty candidates are in the fray in these five seats, and over 93 lakh people are eligible to decide their fate, they added.

Purnea recorded a voter turnout of 36.59 per cent, Katihar registered 35.37 per cent, Kishanganj recorded 34.65 per cent, Banka registered 32.32 per cent and Bhagalpur recorded 30.29 per cent till 1 pm, officials said.

Nearly 15 voters injured in bee attack during balloting in Tripura

 Around 15 voters, including women, were injured when a swarm of bees attacked the electorate, who were in the queue to cast their votes on Friday at Barabill area of Tripura's Khowai district.

Election officials said that Fire and Emergency Service personnel rushed to the spot and shifted the affected voters to the Khowai district hospital, and after medical treatment, they were sent back to their homes.

The bee attack caused nervousness and anxiety among the voters, and they ran away from the queue.

The Fire and Emergency Service personnel also destroyed the beehive near the polling station, set up in a government building.

The voting later resumed after a brief halt at the polling station in Khowai assembly constituency under the Tripura East parliamentary constituency, where balloting has been underway since 7 a.m.

State BJP chief faces protests in Balurghat as Bengal records 31.25 pc turnout till 11 a.m.

West Bengal recorded a voter turnout of 31.25 per cent till 11 a.m. in the three Lok Sabha seats where elections are being held on Friday.

Darjeeling recorded the highest turnout till 11 a.m. at 32.75 per cent, followed by Raiganj (32.51 per cent), and Balurghat (28.11 per cent), as per the data from the office of the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), West Bengal

Reports of stray incidents of poll-related violence that surfaced in the first two hours of polling declined substantially over the next two hours.

The CEO's office received a complaint from the BJP's Darjeeling unit alleging that party candidate Raju Bista faced resistance from the local Trinamool Congress workers when he tried to enter a polling centre in Siliguri.

Earlier on Friday morning, a similar report surfaced at Tapan under the Balurghat Lok Sabha seat where party nominee and state BJP President Sukanta Majumdar faced protests by Trinamool workers while he tried to enter a polling centre.

As per sources, the Election Commission has sought an action taken report on the matter from the CEO's office.

Elderly voter dies in queue as Rajasthan records 26.84 pc turnout till 11 am

A voter turnout of 26.84 per cent was recorded till 11 a.m. for the 13 Lok Sabha seats in Rajasthan where voting is being held on Friday.

Banswara registered the highest polling percentage till 11 a.m. at 30.04 per cent, followed by Barmer (29.58 per cent), Jhalawar Karan (28.88 per cent), Jalore (28.50 per cent), Kota (28.30 per cent), Udaipur (27.46 per cent), Chittaurgarh (26.48 per cent), Jodhpur (25.75 per cent), Rajsamand (25.58 per cent), Bhilwara (25.15 per cent), Pali (24.62 per cent), Ajmer (24.43 per cent), and Tonk-Sawai Madhopur (24 per cent).

At Booth No. 179 in Kota Bundi, a 108-year-old woman named Bhuri Bai exercised her franchise.

Due to rain and strong winds, the tents of the party agents were blown away at some polling stations.

In another incident at Pur town in Bhilwara, an elderly man named Chhaganlal (80) died before casting his vote. Chhaganlal had come to vote with his grandson at the community centre where he collapsed after feeling dizzy while standing in the queue. Doctors were called to the spot, who declared him dead.

Polling was also boycotted at some places in the state. The voters did not turn up to exercise their franchise at Aadibhit village under the Banswara Assembly segment due to an old dispute over the nuclear power plant in Banswara.

Voters at Booth No. 116 under the Dhurasani gram panchayat in Pali district boycotted polling citing a water crisis and poor condition of roads in their village. Tehsildar Dilip Singh has reached the spot to hold talks with the angry villagers.

18.83 pc polling till 11 am in eight constituencies in Maharashtra

An estimated 18.83 per cent turnout was recorded till 11 a.m. in eight constituencies of Maharashtra in the second phase of the Lok Sabha polls.

Wardha recorded 18.35 per cent turnout, Akola (17.37 per cent), Amravati (17.73 per cent), Buldhana (17.92 per cent), Hingoli (18.19 per cent), Nanded (20.85 per cent), Parbhani (21.77 per cent) and Yavatmal Washim (18.01 per cent).

A total of 1,49, 25, 912 eligible voters will exercise their voting rights in 16,589 polling stations in these eight constituencies.

Over 33 pc votes polled in Kerala after five hours

 Kerala, on Friday, where polling to all the 20 Lok Sabha seats is being held, after five and a half hours of voting, recorded 33.45 per cent voter turnout, according to the Election Commission.

For 2019 Lok Sabha polls, there was a 77.67 per cent turnout; and given the present rate of polling on Friday, expectations are that it could cross 80 per cent.

The highlight on Friday has been that voters across the state queued up even before polling began at 7 a.m.

Among those who cast their vote were all the leading lights starting from Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, former Defense Minister A. K. Antony, Leader of Opposition V. D. Satheesan, besides Lok Sabha candidates from all the three political fronts including Shashi Tharoor, Suresh Gopi, P. K. Kunhalikutty, Shafi Parambil, E. P. Jayarajan and numerous others.

Over 10 pc polling in Jammu LS seat in first 2 hours

More than 10 per cent of the over 17.8 lakh eligible voters exercised their franchise in the first two hours of polling in the second phase of Lok Sabha election in the Jammu constituency on Friday, Jammu and Kashmir poll officials said.

The Jammu Lok Sabha seat is one of the 89 constituencies in 13 states and Union territories across the country where polling is being held today.

7.4 per cent turnout recorded in eight Lok Sabha seats in Maharashtra till 9 am in second phase

 Nearly 7.4 per cent of the 1.49 eligible voters cast their ballots till 9 am in eight Lok Sabha seats in Maharashtra in the second phase of general elections on Friday, officials said.

Voting started at 7 am in Buldhana, Akola, Amravati, Wardha and Yavatmal-Washim seats in the west Vidarbha region and Hingoli, Nanded and Parbhani constituencies in Marathwada, and will end at 6 pm, officials said.

Till 9 am, the Nanded constituency recorded 7.73 per cent voting. It stood at 7.23 per cent in Hingoli, 9.72 per cent in Parbhani, Wardha (7.18), Akola (7.17), Amravati (6.34), Buldhana (6.61) and Yavatmal-Washim (7.23), they said, adding that the average turnout recorded in these eight seats is about 7.4 per cent.

Bihar: Nearly 10 pc voter turnout recorded in 5 LS seats till 9 am

Around 9.84 per cent of over 93 lakh voters in five Lok Sabha constituencies of Bihar exercised their franchise till 9 am on Friday, an official said.

Polling started at 7 am in Kishanganj, Katihar, Purnia, Bhagalpur and Banka and will continue till 6 pm, he said.

The electors, including 45.15 lakh women and 306 belonging to the third gender, will decide the fate of 50 nominees.

Over 12.01 per cent of the electorate voted in Katihar, 10.65 per cent in Banka, 9.36 per cent in Purnea, 8.92 per cent in Bhagalpur and 8.32 per cent in Kishanganj, till 9 am, the official said.

Tripura records 17 pc voter turnout in first two hours

 Around 17 per cent of voters cast their votes till 9 a.m. in Tripura East Lok Sabha constituency, where polling is underway amid tight security cover, officials said. 

Election officials said that with the deployment of Central and state forces, including Tripura State Rifles (TSR), heavy security arrangements have been made in the Tripura East Lok Sabha seat to foil any incidents of violence.

The officials said that around 14 lakh electorate, including 6.94 lakh female voters, are eligible to cast their votes in 1,664 polling stations in different districts of the state to decide the fate of nine candidates in the politically crucial parliamentary seat.

LS elections: Rajasthan witnesses nearly 12 per cent polling in first two hours

Nearly 12 percent voter turnout was recorded in the first two hours of polling across 13 Lok Sabha seats and one assembly constituency in Rajasthan on Friday. The voting percentage in the first two hours in the second phase of the Lok Sabha polls is slightly above that of the first phase. The polling percentage in 12 Lok Sabha seats, which went to polls on April 19, by this time was 10.67 per cent.

5 Lok Sabha seats in Assam record voter turnout of 9.15 pc till 9 am

An estimated 9.15 per cent of 77,26,668 electors voted till 9 am in five parliamentary constituencies of Assam, where polling is underway in the second phase on Friday, officials said.

The highest polling of 14.13 per cent was recorded in Diphu (ST), followed by 9.61 per cent in Karimganj, 9.16 per cent at Darrang-Udalguri, 9.07 per cent in Nagaon and the lowest 5.49 per cent in Silchar, they said.

Polling began at 7 am and will continue till 5 pm.

An estimated 9.21 per cent turnout was reported during the first two hours since voting began for the first phase of Lok Sabha polls in 14 constituencies in Karnataka on Friday.

Long queues were seen at polling booths, as people, especially senior citizens and morning walkers came out to vote during the early hours since the voting began at 7 am.

Bengal: Over 15 pc votes polled till 9 am in 3 LS seats

Nearly 15.7 per cent of 51.17 lakh voters in three Lok Sabha constituencies of West Bengal exercised their franchise till 9 am on Friday, an Election Commission official said.

Polling began at 7 am in Darjeeling, Balurghat and Raiganj constituencies and would continue till 6 pm.

Raiganj registered the highest voter turnout of 16.46 per cent, while Darjeeling recorded 15.74 per cent and Balurghat 14.74 per cent, till 9 am, he said.

So far, the commission has registered 241 complaints, mostly related to EVM malfunctioning, the official said.

“The polling has been peaceful thus far. Out of the 241 complaints, 43 have been resolved,” he added.

Voting underway in five Lok Sabha seats in Assam

 Voting is underway for five Lok Sabha seats in Assam in the second phase of polls. Elections are taking place in Nagaon, Darrang-Udalguri, Diphu, Silchar and Karimganj parliamentary constituencies.

There are 62 candidates in the fray with Assam minister Parimal Suklabaidya, and incumbent MPs from the BJP and Congress, Dilip Saikia and Pradyut Bordoloi respectively, are the key candidates in these five seats.

More than 77 lakh voters will exercise their voting power in the second phase of polls in Assam. The Election Commission has deployed 60 companies of the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) in the state for smooth conduct of the polls.

There are 9,133 polling stations across the state and among them, 8,227 polling stations come under the rural areas.

Voting underway for 13 LS seats in Rajasthan, long queues at polling booths

Voting was underway for 13 seats in the second phase of Lok Sabha elections in Rajasthan on Friday.

Voting was being held in Jodhpur, Barmer, Pali, Jalore, Rajsamand, Ajmer, Bhilwara, Chittorgarh, Udaipur, Banswara, Tonk-Sawai Madhopur, Kota, Jhalawar-Baran. A total of 152 candidates are in the fray for these seats.

Long queues were seen in the early morning in different polling booths. Over 2.80 crore voters will decide the fate of the candidates contesting for 13 seats.

Of these, 8.66 lakh voters under the age group of 18 to 19 years old are first-time voters out of which over five lakh are boys and over three lakh voters are girls, and nine voters are third gender.

Voting underway in MP's six LS seats

The second phase of general elections in six constituencies of Madhya Pradesh began at its scheduled time of 7 a.m. on Friday.

The constituencies where voting is taking place are: Khajuraho, Tikamgarh, Damoh (all three in Bundelkhand region), Rewa, Satna (both in Vindhya region) and Hoshangabad.

According to the Madhya Pradesh Chief Electoral Office, there are 12,828 polling booths, 2,865 of them are tagged as 'critical'. Of these, 1336 booths are being run exclusively by women.

Polling for three Lok Sabha seats in West Bengal - Darjeeling, Raiganh and Balurghat - also began today. In the first 30 minutes since the polling began, reports of voters' intimidation started surfacing from the Balurghat Lok Sabha constituency where the main contestant is state BJP chief Sukanta Majumdar. Majumdar said that the two places where such complaints have mainly surfaced from at Gangarampur and Itahar, reported IANS.

Polling in all the 20 Lok Sabha seats in Kerala for the 2024 general election commenced at 7am on Friday amidst tight security arrangements with the state witnessing 5.62 per cent turnout after the first hour of voting.

People queued up since early morning outside the over 25,000 polling booths in the state to avoid the hot weather that was likely as the day progressed.

Long queues of voters were seen outside polling booths in all Lok Sabha seats in the state.

Nirmala Sitharaman, Narayana Murthy, Rahul Dravid among early voters in Bengaluru

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, software industry icon N R Narayana Murthy, his wife and Rajya Sabha member Sudha Murty, former cricketer Rahul Dravid and actor Prakash Raj were among the early voters as polling began in 14 Lok Sabha constituencies in Karnataka on Friday.

Many booths reported brisk voting in the first hour of polling as people sought to "beat the heat".

Speaking to PTI Videos, Prakash Raj said he voted for the candidate that he has faith in and "for the issues mentioned in the manifesto of the parties."

"I have voted against the hate and people who are dividing the country. I have voted for a good representative from my constituency," he said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged people on Friday to cast their votes in record numbers in the second phase of the Lok Sabha polls and said a high voter turnout strengthens democracy.

Asserting that their vote is their voice, Modi especially told the young voters and women voters to turn up at the polling booths in great numbers.

"Urging everyone in constituencies voting today, in the second phase of the Lok Sabha elections, to participate in record numbers.

"A high voter turnout strengthens our democracy. I especially urge our young voters and women voters to turn out in great numbers. Your vote is your voice!" the prime minister said on X.

Polling begins on 89 seats across India in second of 7-phase elections at 7 am

Polling for the second phase of the Lok Sabha elections started in 88 parliamentary constituencies across 12 states and a Union Territory.

While 89 constituencies were slated to go to polls in the second phase, voting in Madhya Pradesh's Betul was advanced to the third phase on May 7 following the death of the BSP candidate in the fray.

Out of the 88 constituencies in the second phase, 73 are general seats, while 6 are reserved for Scheduled Tribes (ST) and 9 for Scheduled Castes (SC).
