Delhi Railway Station Stampede LIVE Update: 18 dead, several injured; high-level probe ordered

At least 18 people were killed and several others sustained injuries in a stampede at New Delhi Railway Station on Saturday. The incident reportedly caused due to a sudden rush of passengers who tried to board trains for the Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj. The injured were rushed to Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narain (LNJP) Hospital for treatment. In a statement, the Ministry of Railways said that a high-level inquiry has been ordered. 
 
"Distressed by the stampede at New Delhi Railway Station. My thoughts are with all those who have lost their loved ones. I pray that the injured have a speedy recovery. The authorities are assisting all those who have been affected by this stampede," tweeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Additional RPF deployed to facilitate Maha Kumbh devotees: Central Railway after Delhi stampede

A day after the stampede at New Delhi Railway Station claimed 18 lives, Central Railway Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) Swapnil Nila said on Sunday that additional Railway Protection Force (RPF) and commercial staff have been deployed at stations to facilitate passengers and contain the swelling crowd.

Talking to IANS, Nila shared various arrangements made by the Central Railway for facilitating Maha Kumbh devotees and clearing the extra rush of passengers.

Most patients stable, four under observation: LNJP hospital sources

The majority of the patients have lower limb injuries, and few have bone injuries. Four people are under observation, and the rest have been discharged after primary treatment. Most of the patients are stable. A team of 15 doctors is taking care of the injured patients, reported ANI as per LNJP Hospital Sources.

Poonam Devi, a relative of a deceased, arrives at LNJP Hospital mortuary to receive the body of her relative, says, "There was suddenly an announcement that the train will be coming on platform 14. People started running, and there was a stampede... I got information that the bodies have been kept here so I have come here to collect the body of my relative... We were going to Chhapra, Bihar... I have no idea about my train ticket, and neither do I know which train I was supposed to board."

Chief Public Relations Officer of Northern Railway, Himanshu Shekhar Upadhyay, said, "When this tragic incident took place yesterday, at that time, Magadh Express going towards Patna was standing on platform number 14 of New Delhi Railway Station, and Uttar Sampark Kranti going towards Jammu was standing on platform number 15. During this, a passenger coming towards platforms 14-15 slipped and fell on the stairs, and many passengers standing behind him were hit, and this tragic incident took place. This is being investigated by a high-level committee. No train was cancelled, nor was there any change in platform... The incident is being investigated, so let the committee submit their report and findings. The situation at the platform is normal now. All trains are running at their usual time..."

An eyewitness, Ravi said, "The stampede broke out around 9:30 pm... When people on platform number 13 saw trains on platforms 14 and 15 - they moved towards these platforms. The platforms of the trains were not changed, but the crowd was so huge that it could not be controlled...."

"The crowd was beyond the limit, people were gathered at the (foot over) bridge... Such a huge crowd wasn't expected. I have never seen such a massive crowd at the railway station, even during the festivals. People from the administration and even NDRF personnel were there, but when the crowd exceeded the limit, it wasn't possible to control them...," said an eyewitness.

A sergeant in the Indian Air Force (IAF) and eyewitness, Ajit said, "We have a tri-service office at the railway station. When I was returning after my duty I couldn't go as there was a huge crowd... I tried to convince people and also made announcements appealing to people to avoid gathering on the platform in large numbers...The administration was working hard to prevent any mishap, but no one was listening... On Stampede at New Delhi railway station, Delhi's caretaker CM and AAP leader Atishi said, "Those who lost their lives, their families have been informed. It's a sad incident. Our two MLAs are here.
