Mark Tully, the veteran journalist whose voice and writings helped generations understand India with depth and sensitivity, passed away on Sunday at the age of 90. Widely regarded as one of the most respected foreign correspondents to report from the country, Tully died at a private hospital in New Delhi after a period of illness.
Tully had been unwell for some time and was admitted to Max Hospital in Saket about a week ago. Confirming his death, senior journalist and close friend Satish Jacob said that Tully passed away on Sunday afternoon. His demise marks the end of an era in international journalism, particularly in reportage on India.
Born on October 24, 1935, in Calcutta (now Kolkata), Mark Tully went on to build a distinguished career with the British Broadcasting Corporation. He served as the BBC’s New Delhi bureau chief for 22 years, a period during which he reported on some of India’s most significant political and social developments. Known for his calm narration and deep understanding of the country, Tully became a familiar and trusted voice for audiences across the world.
Apart from television journalism, he was also associated with BBC Radio 4, where he presented the programme Something Understood, further showcasing his reflective and thoughtful style.
Chronicler of India Through Books
Tully was also an acclaimed author who wrote extensively about India’s society, politics and contradictions. His notable works include No Full Stops in India, India in Slow Motion, and The Heart of India, books that remain widely read for their nuanced portrayal of the country.
Honours and Legacy
In recognition of his contributions, Tully was knighted in 2002 and later awarded the Padma Bhushan by the Government of India in 2005.
