U.S. Ambassador Mike Waltz warned the Security Council that President Donald Trump was ready to take “very strong action” if the killings continued, saying all options remained on the table. Trump later said the violence appeared to be easing, signaling a possible opening for de-escalation.

Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi responded by declaring that Iran would defend itself “against any foreign threat,” accusing Washington of exploiting human rights concerns to justify pressure on Tehran.

The protests, triggered by a collapsing currency and record inflation, now appear largely smothered under heavy security and an ongoing internet blackout. However, the U.S.-based Human Rights Activists News Agency said at least 2,677 people have been killed so far, the deadliest unrest in decades.

The U.S. announced new sanctions on senior Iranian officials and imposed a 25 per cent tariff on any country doing business with Iran. The G7 and European Union also signaled further penalties.

Regional diplomats from Egypt, Oman, Saudi Arabia and Qatar reportedly urged Trump to avoid military action, warning it could destabilize the Middle East and harm the global economy.
