The Consulate General of India in Toronto on Tuesday announced that the Toronto has officially declared October 20, 2025, as 'Diwali Day', honoring the Festival of Lights and the contributions of the Indian community to the city’s social and cultural fabric.
In a post on X, the Consulate highlighted that this recognition celebrates the triumph of light over darkness and good over evil, reflecting Diwali’s spirit of hope and optimism.
The proclamation was shared by Mayor Olivia Chow, who said, “On Diwali Day, we recognize and celebrate the historic and ongoing contributions of the South Asian community that form an important part of Toronto’s motto: ‘Diversity our Strength.’”
Diwali, the festival of lights, brings families and communities together. The main day involves worship of Lord Ganesha and Goddess Lakshmi for wealth and prosperity, while other days include Naraka Chaturdashi, Govardhan Puja, and Bhai Dooj, celebrating familial bonds and devotion.
Earlier, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and Foreign Minister Anita Anand extended greetings, emphasizing the festival’s message of light triumphing over darkness.
PM Carney noted, “Families across Canada will light diyas and celebrate good over evil,” while FM Anand shared heartfelt wishes from her family saying, "Over the course of my life, one of the most special times of the year has been Diwali with my family, and the celebration of light over darkness and good over evil. From my family to yours, happy Diwali."
This official recognition underscores Toronto’s commitment to diversity and highlights how festivals like Diwali promote universal values of light over darkness, good over evil, and family unity, connecting Indians worldwide with their roots and inspiring cross-cultural appreciation.
