‘They’ll try to impeach’: Trump issues warning to Republicans before 2026 midterm polls

US President Donald Trump on Tuesday raised concerns about the 2026 midterm elections while addressing a House Republican caucus retreat in Washington, warning that a loss of GOP control in the House could trigger impeachment efforts by Democrats. As per international media, Trump told lawmakers that winning the midterms was critical, asserting that Democrats would “find a reason” to impeach him if Republicans fail to retain their majority, reported ANI.

Emphasizing the political stakes, Trump said the midterm outcome would directly affect his presidency. He acknowledged the long-standing trend of ruling parties losing seats during midterm elections and voiced frustration over public sentiment, particularly regarding leadership and economic issues. While expressing confidence in the success of his presidency, Trump questioned why voters often turn against the incumbent party despite perceived achievements.

According to reports, Democrats are entering the 2026 cycle with renewed confidence after recent electoral gains and are optimistic about reclaiming the House, though expectations of a sweeping victory remain uncertain. Nevertheless, the broader political climate is seen as favouring Democrats.

House Speaker Mike Johnson echoed Trump’s concerns last month, warning that a Democratic takeover of the House would lead to impeachment proceedings and political instability. Trump was previously impeached twice—once in 2019 after Democrats gained House control and again in 2021 near the end of his first term. More recently, some Democrats have floated impeachment calls following a US operation in Caracas involving the capture of former Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro and his wife.
