Tensions rise as Trump threatens action against Iran
US President Donald Trump has issued a stern warning to Iran, saying the country would face severe consequences if its authorities resort to killing protesters amid ongoing unrest.
"I have let them know that if they start killing people, which they tend to do during their riots -- they have lots of riots- if they do it, we are going to hit them very hard," Trump said during an interview.
Large-scale protests have erupted across Iran, with thousands taking to the streets of Tehran and other cities to protest a failing economy and rising inflation. Soon after the demonstrations began, internet access and telephone services were reportedly cut.
The protests, largely driven by economic distress, have also seen rare chants supporting Crown Prince Reza Pahlavi, the son of Iran’s last king. The unrest, which began on Wednesday, has spread to cities and rural towns nationwide, forcing markets and bazaars to shut in solidarity.

According to a US-based human rights group, at least 41 people have been killed and over 2,270 detained so far. As protests intensify, pressure is mounting on Iran’s leadership, including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
“I warn the Islamic Republic, its leader and the (Revolutionary Guard) that the world and (President Donald Trump) are closely watching you. Suppression of the people will not go unanswered," said Pahlavi said n a statement.
