Potential successors to Ayatollah Khamenei listed as Iran begins transition
Iran is entering a historic and uncertain political transition following the reported death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Khamenei, who led the country since 1989, was the longest-serving head of state in the Middle East. His death marks only the second change of leadership since the 1979 Islamic Revolution. The Iranian state has declared 40 days of mourning and seven days of public holiday, according to international media reports.
A three-person council will temporarily oversee leadership duties during the transition, comprising the country’s president, the head of the judiciary, and a jurist from the Guardian Council. The council will manage affairs until the appointment of a new Supreme Leader, signaling a delicate period for Iran’s political structure.
Process for Selecting a Successor
Under Iran’s constitution, the Assembly of Experts, an 88-member body of Islamic scholars elected for eight-year terms, is tasked with appointing, supervising, and if necessary, dismissing the Supreme Leader. However, the process is tightly controlled, as candidates are vetted by the Guardian Council, whose members are chosen directly or indirectly by the Supreme Leader, creating a closed system. Since Khamenei’s rise in 1989 following Ruhollah Khomeini’s death, leadership succession has largely remained an internal clerical matter.

Contenders and Reactions
Several figures are considered potential successors, including Hojjat-ol-Eslam Mohsen Qomi, Ayatollah Alireza Arafi, Ayatollah Mohsen Araki, Ayatollah Gholam Hossein Mohseni Ejei, and Ayatollah Hashem Hosseini Bushehri. Opposition leaders have also responded: Maryam Rajavi called for unity and civilian protection amid instability, while exiled crown prince Reza Pahlavi urged solidarity. The National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI) announced plans for a transitional administration to organize free elections.
US President Donald Trump confirmed Khamenei’s death on Truth Social, describing him as “one of the most evil people in history” and framing the event as “the single greatest chance for the Iranian people to take back their Country.” The announcement followed joint US-Israel strikes on Iran, including explosions near the Supreme Leader’s office reported by Iranian media.
